|
Name: Ted Parker/Don Page
Date: 8/10/2008 5:57 PM
Whilst seawatching at Hartlepool Headland today, a White's Thrush flew in off the
sea from the east at approximately 11.35am. It was first seen about 500m offshore,
flying about 15m above the waves and almost directly towards us. It got closer and
closer and eventually flew low over the Promenade and along the top of the wall
running down to the prom from the public toilets, just above the highest course
of stonework. It was only about 20m away and in perfect light. It then flew along
the railings adjacent to the wall and disappeareed behind the toilet block. The
closeness of the bird and excellent light conditions allowed all the salient features
to be clearly seen, albeit all too brieffly. Unfortunately, we don't know whether
it kept going or veered from its course into one of the neighbouring gardens. This
was a truly incredible experience that one only dreams of happening during a lifetime
and Don and I were still shaking over half an hour later. Otherwise, the seawatch
was quiet, with only a few Common and 3 Velvet Scoters and 4 Red-throated Divers.

Hobby at Cowpen Bewley was still around all afternoon. Definitely a different bird
from last week. This one is much more brown on it's back and centre tail feathers
more prominent protruding beyond the arc of the others. At first glance it's easy
to dismiss as a Kestrel as from above the brown tinged back and blackish primaries
resemble a Kestrel which to be honest I did myself until closer look at the photos
I took of what I thought were two Kestrel tangling claws. This afternoon it was
mostly over the ploughed field on the north side of Claxton Beck. I was sat on top
of the hill watching it hunt over the field inbetween roosting on the easterly of
the twin pylons. Every now and again it flew towards the hill. An added bonus was
a juvenile Osprey flying through first west and then back east towards Saltholme
Ponds. Kingfisher on the main pond this morning as well.

I was disappointed to see so many people at the South Gare last night. I take my
dogs for a walk down there most nights after tea and we are used to seeing quite
lot of wildlife - including many of the birds that get a mention on here. There
must have been more that a hundred people scaring everything else off just to get
a glimpse of one bird. These are not bird lovers.

Seawatching this morning was very poor with 66 Little Gulls and 2 Arctic Skuas the
only highlights. Still good numbers of migrants around the Headland with fewer chats
(Wheatears, Whinchats and Redstarts) but more warblers, especially Willow Warblers
and Garden Warblers and an increase in both Pied and Spotted Flycatcher numbers.
Highlights were 2 Icterine Warblers, 1 Wood Warbler, 1 Kingfisher and 1 Wryneck
at the headland, an exhausted Bonxie on the Old Town Moor and a Greenish Warbler
at West View Cemetery. The flooded area of Seaton Golf Course produced adult Med
Gull, 7 Black-tailed Godwits and 2 Little Stints. 1 Little Egret at the Tidal Pool.
A further Wryneck was present at North Gare Bushes (at the Seaton end). Best of
all was the Great Snipe seen near the pumping station at South Gare, typically seen
only in flight (seen briefly but well 3 times). Also present in the area was a Red-backed
Shrike, Wryneck, 10+ Redstarts and 5 Whinchats, a fitting finale to an excellent
weekend in Cleveland!

The Terek appeared on the Calor Gas pool last night at about 2030 - just to offer
hope for people trying this evening as the pattern that seems to have developed
(see message below) appears to suggest that it would be 2230 tonight after last
night's 2130 sighting and an hour later each night through the week. I did not have
the RBA number on my phone to report the sighting - apologies. The bird appeared
with increasing numbers of redshank on the pool as the evening wore on. It was wing
stretching and "flexing it's muscles" frequently - perhaps preparing for a long
flight in view of the no-show so far this morning.....? Cheers A

Terek Sandpiper still on the Calor Gas Pool at 7:35am this morning. The bird seems
to have settled into a routine. It has been present early to mid am every morning
in the Calor Gas Pool and then seems to disappear for most of the day before returning
to the same site during the evening. It looks like the evening appearance is tide
dependant as it has arrived back on the Calor Gas Pool and hour later each evening.
The arrival times over the last few day have been 8:20pm (thursday), 7:19pm (Wednesday)
and 6:15 (Tuesday). With this in mind, early morning may be the best time to look
for it over the weekend.

Tried to connect with Marsh Harrier today after work. (16:30) On the way down to
the hide met another guy who said he was there for same reason and said he had been
there 6 hours and left. When I approached the hide, I saw a Marsh Harrier 100 yards
to the north and a short eared owl had a go at it - then it went out of view as
the SEO landed on top of telegraph post. The harrier appeared again to the north
of Dormans Pool and then soared high up for 5 minutes before stooping on the east
side near where the raised car park is (typical they are always on the other side
of the pool. It had a cream coloured crown and was awesome to watch. Plenty of whitethroats
- saw at least 6, and sedge warblers and 3 wrens. Nothing unusual on Dormans pool

by car park still. Cuckoo between car park and tip sat briefly on tip fence before
heading over Dorman's Pool. Back Saltholme Pond - Wheatear x1 sat by end of the
causeway, Garganey drake x1, Northern Pintail pair. Most notable were the hirundines
in a feeding frenzy swarming low over the pond surface - Swallow c.40, House Martin
c.12, Sand Martin c.12, Swift c.50. Long Drag - walked end to end. Not a lot to
show for it - several Willow Warbler, a Chiffchaff and a Cuckoo. Loads of Reed Warbler

I would like to pass on my thamks to all who attended Greenabella yesterday! The
morning was brisk & we had more than 60 species in the first two hours! In the
afternoon the weather closed in & we had only one new sighting in the last three
hours! Still, 82 species for the day was a good count given the weather, including
22 new sightings for the sites list this year, taking us to 102 YTD, & that
will bring £2k in to the club's coffers. Thank you again.

FOR SALE: Just bought a Canon 1D mark III making either my existing Canon 30D somewhat
superfluous (at least to me...though the wife has suggested she may use it if unsold).
This camera seems to go for £150 to £300 on Ebay which is a guide price. This camera
works well but has a bodywork graze and a screen that is lightly scratched. If anyone
is interested please email mikehunter@talktalk.net. Thanks Mike

Reference the recent posting of Roseate or Arctic Tern. We had doubts to our initial
id and thanks to other peoples input, it looks like it was actually a black billed
Common Tern, possibly of the longipennis race (apparantly very rare in this country).
I've certainly never seen a Common Tern with such a black bill and dark red (slightly
shorter) legs. Possibly the same bird on Back Saltholme yesterday. Dave Brown
