Driving along the A171 Guisborough-Whitby road, and almost mid-way between Lockwood Beck and Scaling Dam, there is a crossroads at NZ691129. . Turning N here would take you to the village of Moorsholm, but turning S takes you along a narrow lane that runs into a farmyard after less than a mile.
The most conspicuous feature as you follow the lane is Freebrough Hill beside the hedgerow to the W. It can be a good spot to find Ring Ouzels in April. The fields either side of the road after the hill frequently have good numbers of Golden Plover, and particularly birds of the Northern race in spring plumage.
If driving this lane, one needs to park and to continue on foot, following the footpath through the farmyard onto the moorland. Immediately to one’s left is a wood with a lot of mature trees in a slight hollow and this regularly has singing Redstart in spring. Access to the wood is not easy, but Woodcock can be found here at times.
