Driving past the Avocet island which I think you are talking about, I noticed that there had been some gardening of the reed stems of 2010, leaving only a fringe around the edge of the island. The inner area was bare. I guess this was to encourage the key wader species and Common Terns which do not like to breed in thick vegetation but like a clear view. As the season progresses the reeds will re grow and provide cover for tiny chicks. The fringe around the edge may provide some cover from watching corvids. early in the season.

Alistair was correct about the saline lagoon island,I did the gardening on behalf of SABIC to optimise the breeding area for key waders and terns. He was also correct about leaving a fringe of cover around the edge of the island so as to help stop predation of chicks(we think this may have happened to some of the Avocet chicks last year).
