MARs does of course refer to the new book, Mammals, Amphibians and Reptiles of the North East, which was launched on Saturday.  Its similar in style to the TBC Breeding Birds Atlas, not surprisingly as it took some inspiration from that excellent publication.  It is 245 pages in all and covers all 62 species found in the North East as well as vagrants, extinct and escapes (there is even a short section on alleged big cat sightings- surprise, surprise!)

Some of the cetacean accounts and drawings are by TBC's very own Chris Bielby.

"This timely and authoritative account of the past history, present status and future prospects of our most charismatic animals is essential reading for anyone with an interest in the wildlife of our region"  Phil Gates' words not mine.

If you would like a copy (and who wouldn't) it is available from the Natural History Society of Northumbria, Great North Museum:Hancock, NE2 4PT, Tel: 0191 2226765 or best to go to  http://www.nhsn.ncl.ac.uk/news/mars-ne/ .  It is £13.50 including P&P or a straight tenner if you are able to pick it up from the Hancock.

(NB if you are a member of the NHSN and pay the supplement for Transactions, you will be getting a free copy anyway as they have published it as the 73 volume of Northumbrian Naturalist so only buy one if you want two copies.)

Ditto, just in time for Christmas.

Thanks to those who have bought one; I hope you enjoy it.

I've just managed to get hold of a box of the books which I'll keep in the back of the car so if I am likely to be seeing any of you and you would like one I can save you the postage.

Cheers
Ian
