What should the home page of the website look like?

Hi,

has anyone any ideas how to improve the look of the homepage? It would need to keep the 'welcome' text and the Clubs announcements on twitter but it has been suggested that the @clevelandbirds news should be moved to another page like under the sightings menu (where I have also just added it).

I do not want something that I need to update by changing photos etc regularly but I am open to suggestions in text, graphics, scans, sketches etc for a static front page.

In addition does anyone have a reasonable knowledge of creating websites with Wordpress (rather than just blogs)?
