Following Jamie's suggestion at my talk to TBC last December, I have persuaded Northumbria Mammal Group to embark on a publication covering the Mammals of the North East.  This includes Cleveland, Durham & Northumberland.  Part of this publication would involve distribution maps and, as I demonstrated, our records of mammalian distribution is woefully inadequate, even for Cleveland.

One of our partners on this project is the EYE project, which is gradually morphing into a Local Records Centre but currently is engaged in getting more members of the public involved in recording wildlife in their local area.  Anyway they have kindly launched a public survey on Mammals which is based around species that it are very difficult to misidentify such as badgers, hedgehogs and foxes.

I would just like to request that if you have any records of mammals at all, in any of the above counties, please could you go on to the EYE website and submit your record.  It is at www.eyeproject.org.uk.   Although the survey concentrates on easy to identify species as it is designed for the general public, if you have records of any other species (and you are sure of the ID down to species) they would be especially welcome as those are the species that the most under recorded.  Alternatively you can e-mail them to me but I would need a grid ref rather than just a location as I don't know where anything is outside of Hartlepool or Darlington or the roads in between  :)

Many thanks
Ian
