Was seen for a short while at 1530hr today. It was harrassed by gulls and others so only stayed for about 5 minutes to catch a fish and then fly off west.

Osprey was also present at 1100hrs - being harried by what I believe was a Hobby? - comments on identification welcome.

It would appear to be a hobby, I think the dark markings under eye should confirm it.

Hi,

looks possibly a little big for Hobby to me compared with the Osprey and possibly a little heavily built but I have very few books to compare it to. I guess you dont have any photos of the underside...

Hi Jamie - my initial reaction when I saw the bird was that it was on the large side and hence my doubt about it being a Hobby. I have some very poor underside shots (at distance), I will post these tonight when I get home from work.

(There is a poor underside shot on my blog site - www.laplandmull.blogspot.com - if you want to have a look)

Hello chaps,

The bird in question is a juvenile Peregrine, though I believe there has been a Hobby at Hurworth Burn recently.

Here's my shots of the Osprey, taken on Tuesday at about 13:30 on 25/08/09 with a Sony 300a using a sigma 70-300mm lens
