Prey ID

Took this in Whitby Harbour today. Cormorant caught prey and was immediately robbed of its prize by the gull. Any idea on what the prey item is ?

Fish remains from fish quey or Cobble perhaps. Vetebra and spine bones showing on left? Spine bones look fine as in a fish rather than mammal or bird. Also possibly decomposed ? Those with fish anatomy knowelge may well provide answer for us. Please!

Hi Neil,
I think I see a white lateral line on the fish so I would think it would be the remains of a Cod that has been discarded by the fishing boats.

Thanks for that. I can see it now. The same bird caught a fish ( unfilleted ) a few minutes later and was immediately robbed by another cormorant. Bad day.
