Earlier this week, a (male) sparrowhawk caught a wood mouse in my garden (alas, I wasn't quick enough with the camera to capture the evidence).  It's the first time I've ever seen a sparrowhak take mammalian prey and it seemed to be a random bit of opportunism: he was sitting on the fence, spotted movement below and pounced.

Has anyone else seen a sparrowhawk take a mammal?

i once found a dead male sparrow hawk and gave it to a taxidermist who informed me it had parts of a fresh mouse in its crop
