Title: Hoopoe - South Gare
Post by: Jaybee on October 11, 2010, 08:25:21 PM
I was fortunate to pick up a Hoopoe at South Gare this afternoon.
Got great views of it as it flew 20 yards along a small grass embankment (inside steel works fence) and landed behind some small mounds of earth.
The bird never re-appeared from behind the mounds and it was almost an hour before anyone drove past and I could pass on news.
Rob (from Stokesley) and his wife returned later (after going to pick up daughter from school) and after 20-30 minutes the hoopoe flew over our heads (coming from the fields behind us) and landed inside the compound again.
We saw it land but for the life of us couldn't pick up the bird.
News was out onto the pager by a guy who had also stopped and soon a good 20 pairs of eyes were scanning for the bird
Unforunately by the time darkness was upon us the bird hadn't been spotted (frustrating as we knew where it had landed roughly)
Barn owl put on a nice show whilst we were stood.
Hopefully tomorrow the bird will be found by someone.

Well done John, your ID skills (and luck) must be improving....

I'll be sure to have my ear-protectors with me just in case we meet up over the next couple of weeks.
