How do I get my pictures to enlarge on clicking and not open in another window in the galleries sections?

The photos need to be under 1000 pixels longest dimension and of course under 300kb else they won't open as they should.
Mostly I use 900x675 pixels though also 900x720 and 1000x750 pixels for larger photos.
