Title: Hawfinches & ravens
Post by: alan crossley on April 09, 2012, 08:05:25 PM
Have at last some free time to myself this coming week, so is it too late to go and see the hawfinches at Sizergh Castle meant to go last year but work got in the way. Are they stil seen form the car park? Are the Ravens stil at Smardale Gil and if so where abouts?

Personally I would still try for the Hawfinches but would get there early to try and see them around the car park.  The Ravens are seen around the main viaduct, just stand on top or follow the track which runs down along side and look underneath.   Park in the small parking area and follow the old Railway line to the viaduct.  Watch out for Red Squirrels along the way.

They'll still be there as they're resident birds. We've seen them in the grounds throughout the year. We spent a week there in early March and usually found them already on the ground in the car park at 7.15am though really the best time for larger numbers was 8.00-9.00. They were still around after that but the car park got busier and the birds scarcer. The cafe and castle opened at 10am by which time there was too much activity.
