Title: re: ACCESS TO THE ‘TRIANGLE’ AND CAUSEWAY, BACK SALTHOLME
Post by: IanF on April 03, 2009, 02:33:54 PM
QuoteFollowing discussions between TBC and RSPB, we have been informed that the 'Triangle' at Back Saltholme, where birders have traditionally parked for many years, is to be closed off to vehicles. Advance notice will be given and it is possible that closure may occur in April 2009. This area now belongs to the RSPB, which has grave concerns over how unsafe this area is in relation to the very busy A178 Seaton Carew Road. In the event of a serious accident, the RSPB would carry some liability as landowner.

Regarding access to the causeway, this will be closed to all people during Reserve opening times. Dave Braithwaite, Site Manager, however, is keen that access at other times is maintained for TBC members only for scientific bird recording, with all relevant records being submitted to Tom Francis, the Cleveland Recorder. Access will be solely to the causeway and not to other parts of the Reserve. Club members will be expected to 'police' this as far as possible to prevent unauthorised access, though such policing should not be 'heavy-handed'. Any significant incidents should be recorded and sent to Emma Birnie, Reserve Warden.

All members wishing to visit the causeway outside Reserve opening times will need to undertake a brief health and safety induction and should submit their names to Emma Birnie at RSPB Saltholme (Tel: 01642 546625; email: emma.birnie@rspb.org.uk). Members wanting to do this must hold a valid membership card.

I spoke with Emma this morning. The first Health and Safety induction takes place at 2:00pm Saturday 4th April. Just inform reception on arrival and they'll direct you to the room. Any TBC member can attend.

If you miss this one then nothing is lost as others will follow. The same access is to be offered to DBC members in due course.

Hi,

here are the details of the next one

Regards,
Jamie

The RSPB is to run another induction session for Club members on Thursday 23rd April at 5.00pm.  Members who wish to access the Causeway and Reserve outside of normal opening hours must atend one of these and obtain a permit.  Would those who are interested in attending please contact Reserve Warden, Emma Birnie (email: emma.birnie@rspb.org.uk  or telephone (07872 157735).  Don't worry if you can't make this session, as the RSPB plan more in the coming months.

Here are details of the final one:-

The last induction this year for the causeway/triangle will be on Wednesday June the 3rd at 17:30 at the RSPB Saltholme Centre. There will be no more inductions after this as it's just not practical to keep them going. The RSPB have now also put signs up at the triangle informing people that it will be closed at end of Mayand they would like to thank everyone for their co-operation and understanding in this matter.

I expect everyone has noticed but it does not really make much difference. They could easily have been moved by anyone at anytime. As birders are all behavng well there and parking where they were when the logs were there I expect there is no need to replace them. Access is still only outside of opening hours to people with permits with or without the logs.
