Title: Avocets' Island
Post by: A McLee on May 17, 2014, 10:14:11 AM
Is it just me to comment, but where have the previously incubating birds and clutches gone?

Likewise, is it just me or is it anything to do with the number of uncontrolled Foxes with cubs. Obviously not cos the cuddly fox wouldn't eat ground nesting birds now would it? Ho hum.

I wouldn't discount egg collecters either, they're probably still around unfortunately.

The vegetation around the edge of the island and around the edge of the pool looks dead to me; some sort of contamination may be ??

Echoing what Keith said there were 2 pairs of Ringed Plover nesting on Old Cemetery Road both with a clutch of 4 eggs. All of the eggs vanished between Friday evening and early Sunday morning.

They could have been taken by natural predators but there was not a trace of any eggshell by either scrape and it seems odd two nests 100 yards apart would lose all their eggs at the same time having been there for nearly a fortnight.

We all know there are at least 2 fairly notorious convicted egg collectors living in the town and I somehow doubt a slap over the wrists would stop their presumably compulsive behaviour.
