On Wednesday I went to see the Black Scoter and without my telescope scanned the sea through my camera lens without seeing the bird. However I did take something like 500 photographs hoping I would find it in the frame. Just checked through all those shots and finally identified the bird, I think in the 490th photo! Still only a record shot though!
