Post by: Sylvia and Mick on October 01, 2009, 09:35:34 PM
1/10/09 - Hooded Merganser still present at Saltholme today - Has anyone else noticed that it has a defective leg?

Looks like this bird is the same bird which was in Tayport, Fife last year.  See Durham Bird Forum

Just recieved the British Birds Report on rare birds in Great Britain in 2008 and as previously suspected the Tayport, Fife bird of Oct/Nov 2008 has been accepted as Britains 5th record!

So providing all relevant authorities agree these birds are one and the same and as long as having a "defective" leg does not result in the Fife bird being reviewed and rejected, the Cleveland record will/should also presumably be found acceptable?

The bird certainly didn't embarrass itself with its behaviour or out-stay it's welcome, it's just a pity that once it's change of status was realised it chose to leave us the very same day! Its not been seen since Oct 3rd as far as i know, the day of the very strong winds when the bird became quite flighty i'm led to believe.

Anyone got any thoughts?

Cheers Ian.

Spoke too soon!

The Hooded Merganser has been re-located today at Hemlington Lake (by John Regan i think), back on the south side of the river just to please the Yorkshire Listers...Not the first Nearctic Duck to be recorded at this site...

Just spoke to the finder of the Merganser at this site and he looked for it yesterday a couple of times but no sign. Not sure if it's been looked for today. On Monday it was with a couple of Tufted Duck but never joined in with the tufties feeding off thrown bread, it apparently alway's kept it's distance but then re-joined the tufties after the feeding had stopped...I've been told a few of the higher ranking Yorkshire listers visited it on monday...

Cheers Ian.

Cheers Ian. I hope it's found soon - on the south of the river.
