Rare Birds / Re: Richard's Pipit - Hartlepool

Well said.....

All the gear, no idea. I never wonder how many get their shots as I've watched them exercise excellent field craft and have been rewarded with stunning shots.

Though a worrying number of birders are joining this "rank" as well. Resist the urge to include me.  ;)

I could (of course) be clutching at straws here but on the last image if you take a look at the top of the foot on the birds left leg it does look "thicker" than the right.

I would be amazed if this wasn't the Harewood House Stork still on its tour of the North Easts bird reserves.

I'm not sure I'd ever get sick of looking at a Thrush Nightingale. Ace little birds.

The Shrike made a brief excursion to the "right side" of the fence late afternoon. Managed to grab a few shots using the car as a hide.

I may delete my post now.  ;)

Fantastic two shots.

Some additional shots from today. If I remember on I'll stick up my YouTube clip later.

Wrens often let out a loud trilling alarm call. I would guess it to be this.

As you know I raised this question today Andrew, and also discussed the age with a couple of other birders present.

Yes you did, my post should have made that clear. Sorry about that Steve.

1st winter for me as well, I clearly put way to much emphasis on the bill. Typical!  ;D

ps. I altered my previous post to clear things up.  :)

In the field today some of us were singing its praises as a 2nd winter but its dawned on me it's could be a 1st winter, as Steve and others said they thought it was in the field today. Down to the fact that the coverts show no hints of being of a 2nd winter bird, the mantle is more suited to 1st winter, and the bill is fine for 1st winter. Shots here to show 1st winters that can have a bill like the bird today: http://www.birdersplayground.co.uk/Caspian%20Gulls%201st%20years%20-%20Jan-Apr%201.html

Do people agree?  :)

Cracking bit of video.

Gulls moult at varying times but within generally set time periods, so this bird is basically more advanced (in moult terms) and looks very clean white headed. It's very common to see Herring Gulls at this time of year (January) with white heads.
