Thanks Toby.

I wonder if some of the early mornings did not prove as popular you had hoped due to a lack of marketing as I, for one, did not know about Dave and Peter opening the Pools hide early two years ago.

On another subject, Saltholme began creating a Kingfisher area near the visitor centre, but this seems to have been scrapped. Is this project ongoing as I would love to see Saltholme attract this stunning species in greater numbers?

I have noticed a lot of sightings early mornings at Saltholme at listed on the centre notice board. This obviously means that staff members are present to see this wildlife, yet the reserve remains closed.

Is it not possible to open the hides early, even if it meant keeping the visitor centre closed till 10?

General Discussion / Re: Red Squirrels Shot Dead

Just received this reply from Red Squirrels Northern England:-

Red Squirrels Northern England Hi David. Nick, our project manager, has spoken with the ranger at Pow Hill at length. Fortunately, only one red squirrel body was found. As it is illegal to harm red squirrels, the police are involved and we hope that those responsible are found. What a sad situation and fingers crossed it doesn't happen again.

General Discussion / Red Squirrels Shot Dead
July 27, 2012, 11:02:03 PM
I have been visiting a site in the Derwent Valley near Consett called POW Hill Country Park. Durham County Council promote it as one of the best places to see Red Squirrels. Some well placed feeders attracted them regularly. I took many great photos there as there was a thriving population, but today found out the council has taken down the feeders as apparently some chavs turned up and shot the reds, no doubt for a laugh. The news appeared on the Durham Bird Club forum. The language I would like to use about these people I cannot print, but as the reds are having a hard enough time surviving this is a disgusting act that these chavs will no doubt get away with.

Fantastic shots, Ray. The blue water really makes the bird stand out - beautiful. I visited this afternoon, but it was wasn't budging from the far end of the fire station field.

Took this shot at Saltholme yesterday, collecting Caterpillars to feed its young on the Kestrel Trail. I suspect its a Reed Warbler or a Whitethroat, but can't be sure.

Cheers for the reply. Yes, I've gone for the same set for the 400mm Canon prime lens. Great quality, but it's just a little fiddly each time you want to move the attached lens hood as you have to remove/attach a seperate piece using velcro.
