General Discussion / Re: WIND TURBINES
June 29, 2013, 11:14:15 PM
Im not so sure its as simple as it might appear. Some of the reports I have seen by birders have said that the bird in Harris was flying erratically almost hitting people never mind wind turbines. Swifts, swallows etc catch insects a few mm in size in mid flight you would think that they are the most unlikely birds of all not to sense in one way or the other, the blades of a wind turbine.

I was in Orkney recently and there is a RSPB reserve at a place called Burgar Hil, the hide is almost underneath an 80m wind turbine. Red Throated Divers and Hen Harriers breed there, and there has never been a recorded collision.

Perhaps the degree of danger is to do with specific sighting of installations, bird species, weather conditions, birds ability to adapt their behaviour and a range of other variables.

General Discussion / Falconer?
December 01, 2011, 10:20:29 PM
Was walking home from work along Coronation Drive on Tuesday night about 6.00pm and saw a big bird (I know, great description but its pitch balck along there) chasing a flock of Redshanks that were foraging on the grass,  putting them up. I then quickly noticed a small flashing light on its leg, then quickly noticed a guy coming out of the darkness and the bird flew to his hand.

Seen guys out down at the blue lagoon before, over the years with birds, but is it not unusual to take birds out at night and so near a busy road?

How underated this little area is. Went out first thing last weekend, 10min walk from our house, Rock Pipit, Purple Sand, Sanderling, Redshank, Med Gull, and all the other gulls, Oyster Catchers etc. What is it about this place? A little gem.

Very nice, good idea for a thread this, sure there must be some more budding artists out there.
