The first is a great photographic guide and the second is illustrated in the same way as the Collins Bird Guide.

Be careful when using the Manley book as it includes some very rare moths that you are unlikely to see (some are extinct in this country) and misses out some of the commoner one's that you will see in the UK.

Hi Harry
If you want a simple easy to use but very good butterfliy ID book then try either The Pocket Guide to the Butterflies of Great Britain and Ireland by Richard Lewington (£8.81 at Amazon) or the newer Britain's Butterflies by D. E. Newland, Rob Still and David Tomlinson (£17.05 at Amazon) both books are very good, the Lewington book is illustrations and the Tomlinson one is photos.
The Collins Butterfly Guide is a very good reference book but it covers Europe and can lead to confusion if you are a novice.
