Saw a female Shelduck on the Tidal Pool sunday evening with yellow darvic and black KC. Details recieved this morning.

Hi Toby . Thanks again for letting me have details of this bird . Yellow kc was a new bird caught and ringed on the 29 Jan 2012 as a 5 f at seaton marshes Devon . This is the furthest north we have had one of our shelducks recorded s...o its a great record for the group . ( furthest south has been one to central France and Holland to the east ) since 2006 we have ringed 317 new shelduck on the axe estuary and have just recently started to colour ring them all with yellow darvics and black 2 letter codes . The strange bit is it was ringed at seaton marshes and got resighted at seaton carew 452 km NE maybe a home from home or can it read place names ! Neil

Another colour ringed Black-tailed Godwit was on the bottom tank this morning seen from the Phil Stead Hide. I've not tracked it down yet, though it's been reported to the BTO.

A preliminary update from the IWSG is that it was ringed at Montrose, Scotland. Full details to follow.

I've just received full details from the ringer. It was ringed only two weeks ago!

A single colour ringed Curlew on Seaton Common this morning.

QuoteRinged Seal Sands on 7th September 1991 as a juvenile bird (BTO ring no. FC48911).

The bird remained using Seal Sands & Seaton Common throughout the winter and when over-summering and moulting during 1992 as a first summer.  Sightings would suggest it emigrated in it's second summer sometime after 22nd March 1993, returning by 5th July.  Thereafter it was generally recorded on Seal Sands during the late summer/autumn (July - August) and then again late winter (January – March, once in April; 11th in 1995).  Since our team was disbanded at the University in late 2001, the few observations made were by the two of us, largely of the bird foraging on Seaton Common in autumn and winter.  You were last to report the bird, on Seaton Common on 22nd March 2008. Then again on 27/02/2012, 13/04/2012 and now 27/09/2012.

IanF

Two other colour ringed Curlew were present on 28/09/2012

RN GW - ringed 29/08/2000 on Seal Sands and a regular each winter.

RG GN - ringed 21/07/2012 on Seal Sands - one of 36 Curlew ringed that day.

OY NY was present as well.

Simon Elliott

Hi,

I photographed a colour-ringed curlew at Parton Rocks yesterday (6.10.12). The colours were:

Right leg: light blue or light green over black above the 'knee'
Left leg: Black over yellow above the 'knee', white below, with an additional metal ring around 'ankle'

Sorry I'm unable to process the photos at the moment, and the files are too large to post un-processed. Is this a regular?

Regards

Simon Elliott

IanF

You get quite a few Curlew on Parton Rocks and in the harbour. I was over there today and saw a few but no colour ringed ones. The large white ring below the knee on the left leg shows it was ringed on Seal Sands.

It's not a combination I've come across before so it's well worth reporting to the BTO or to Robin Ward - email details on the cr-birding web site.
