ID problem

Seems to be working ok now.
Saw this bird resting in an area of birch and beech. It was with a loose group of chaffinch and goldfinch. The yellow on the back showed up much better than the pics appear to show.

Had a lot of interest so far via my twitter page. Thanks for all the suggestions but I am afraid nothing seems to fully stack up. Thanks to Cleveland Birds for re-tweeting this morning. Appreciated.

Hi Niel. I'm not sure as the pics leave a lot to be desired but with the beak shape,wing bars and the " yellow rump" you described, I think you may just be looking at a juv or female Siskin. Fred.

I learned the the BTO were doing a study of garden birds with unusual plumage characteristics, so I sent them these pics for feedback.
Result? It's a chaffinch
