Around 80 Curlew on Cowpen Marsh this afternoon opposite Saltholme substation.

Two with colour rings new to me.

YG GR a local bird ringed Seal Sands on 17th September 2016.

White F60. Couldn't find the scheme on cr-birding but kind assistance from Robin Ward and Wilf Greenman traced to Finland. Just received reply -

QuoteRinged - OULAINEN, POHJOIS-POHJANMAA, OULU, NW FINLAND 'as young out of nest'

17.07.2015

Another Finnish colour ringed Curlew was on Cowpen Marsh opposite Saltholme substation on 04/12/2022.

Ringed MUHOS, POHJOIS-POHJANMAA, OULU, FINLAND on 03/07/2018 as 'young out of nest'.

There's a third bird with a white colour ring but it's remained to distant to read other than it looks to have four digits rathe than just the three.

F4 was ringed and tagged near Cantley, Norfolk on 20.06.2019 and was one of a
brood of just two. She had a sibling male.

It's been a regular bird passing through this area each year.

IanF

Spent around 10 minutes at Paddy's Pool this morning before flying off towards Back Saltholme.

Ringed as pullus locally May 2018.

IanF

Four Med Gulls back on main lake at RSPB Saltholme this morning after absence of over a week following a heavy snowfall.

Ringed Denmark April 2009.

IanF

Present at Saltholme Hide this morning.

G1 RBY ringed 10/08/2017 Les Salines, SABLES-D'OLONNE, France.

It spent last summer here.

IanF

Eight Barnacle Geese on Cowpen Marsh on 29/04/2023.

One bird with yellow darvic on left tarsus marked with B3. Metal on right tarsus.

The other seven had no rings.

QuoteYellow B3 was ringed 20/7/15 as an adult male on Nordenskioldkysten, Svalbard.

Last reported 4/4/23 near RSPB Mersehead on the Solway.

Possibly represents the migration event on 25/26th the other day (as I know from some tagged birds) that possibly hit northerly winds over North sea and so perhaps aborted to end up at your place

IanF

At least six Common Tern back on the main lake this morning at RSPB Saltholme. One had a metal ring but another had a black darvic with white lettering 9.51.

I've not seen it before but I believe it may be a 2019 bird ringed on the reserve.

IanF
