Can anybody suggest a good place for a day out birding in Co. Durham, preferably close to Darlington and where you can see green woodpeckers and other intersesting birds at this time of year?

Thanks

The most obvious place that springs to mind is Low Barns Reserve near Bishop Auckland. It's run by Durham Wildlife Trust. They charge £2.50 car park fee to non-members but there's room for a couple of cars on the roadside layby near the reserve entrance. The feeding station attracts a good selection of birds. There's a circular walk around the main lake and several hides. Alder Wood can be good for birds as well. Green Woodpecker can sometimes be seen from the West Pond hide.

Thanks Ian, I'll give it a go next week.

Best wishes
