ive only lived in hartlepool a short time and been bird watching even shorter than that so im trying to learn as much as possible at the moment

i was wondering if there are ever any get togethers with people in the hartlepool area. i dont know that many people in hartlepool and im only 21 so no one my age is really into the same things as me so i often go wandering on my own see lots of things and dont quite have the knoledge yet to know what it is im seeing

i would like to learn all the local areas to go and what times its best to go there and what will / wont be there depending on the time of  year ect so i can get the most from it

im pretty much out and about everyday but with not knowing the area so well and not being able to drive i only really venture as far as teesmouth nature reserve car park and then back towards seaton

thanks in advance

Hi Dean,

I think it was you and your girlfriend that I met by North Gare car park on Wednesday evening when the Short-eared Owls and Merlin were around.

TBC meetings are held at the library at Stockton however there are plenty of members based in the Hartlepool area.

Hartlepool is a very good birding area and you're well placed to take advantage. Plenty of waders along the beach in the Crimdon Dene-mouth area. The beach and bushes at the entrance to the Dene and the wooded Dene itself can be very good this time of year with migrants arriving en-masse (we hope) in the next month or two if we get suitable winds.

You're also well placed for Hartlepool Headland another excellent birding area right along the coast from where you are down to the harbour - whther on the sea, beach or cliff tops/promenade. Several members regularly sea watch from in front of the wall by the toilets at the Heugh Battery which I'm sure would give you few pointers if you're down that way.

It's worth keeping an eye on the sightings pages to see what's around currently and I think you've already found the site guides.

yes ian that was me at north gare a few days ago

thanks for taking the time out to speak to me then

i live next to crimdon beach just past where the old hart station was

its 5 minutes walk from my house i go walking everyday around dinner time
ive seen stonechats there and a large flock of young goldfinch there recently

i guess the more i go the more things il eventually see

thanks to everyone who's replied and helped me out, much appriciated

I forgot to mention to check the sea by the Dene - there's quite a few Red-throated Divers and Great Crested Grebe around at present. Previous years I've seen them there almost on the beach edge around high tide. Also Scoter on the sea and a Red-necked Grebe has been in the area. The stream behind the beach often holds waders as well as Sandpipers when they're passing through. I came a cross a Shorelark with Twite and Snow Bunting there 3rd Nov 2006. A Kingfisher is sometimes on the beck in the dene - even when little water there.
Definitely a good place to have your local patch.

thanks ian

like i said i walk around there daily as its so close to my home i ussually cross the rail tracks at hart station then under the viaduct and back along the car park past the horse riding place and back home

il have to walk a little slower next time and keep a look out  :)

Ted Parker

Hi Dean,

The Teesmouth Bird Club provides guided tours to new members (these are announced at our monthly meetings between September and April).  Two of our experienced members, John Fletcher and Dave Nelson will be pleased to show you some of the sites around Hartlepool and other areas around the Tees estuary.  I suggest you contact John Fletcher in the first instance (tel: 01642 818825).  The Club also runs Local Outings for members, details of which are in the Newsletter and on the Website, so you could also take advantage of these.

I hope this helps.

Dean,

Hi, guess that was you I bumped into in the hide @ Seal Sands on Friday. Bit of a coincidence that two of the newest members of the club should meet up on their perambulations like that ! If you want to team up to be shown some of the birding sites round your area as Ted suggested that would be good.

Cheers,

Ian
