Was walking home from work along Coronation Drive on Tuesday night about 6.00pm and saw a big bird (I know, great description but its pitch balck along there) chasing a flock of Redshanks that were foraging on the grass,  putting them up. I then quickly noticed a small flashing light on its leg, then quickly noticed a guy coming out of the darkness and the bird flew to his hand.

Seen guys out down at the blue lagoon before, over the years with birds, but is it not unusual to take birds out at night and so near a busy road?

It sounds as if you saw an Eagle Owl species being flown at what ever birds there may be in the twilight in the area - hardly a gripping flight for the owner to watch. These owls readily breed in captivity and are sold on to " falconers" only to be frequently lost and appear in central Middlesbrough or Stewart Park as was the situation several years ago.
