General Discussion / Re: Red Squirrels Shot Dead

I'd say the most effective action to take?  (Legal Of Course)  would be to retreat to a safe distance and take photo's of those involved and their vehicles etc. Contact the police and provide them with the photo's.

General Discussion / Netting/ringing
May 22, 2012, 10:33:22 AM
Should netting/ringing be carried out during nesting season?  I know it's later but many birds are still nesting. Don't birds find it distressing being caught in the nets at the best of times.

Not sure if you want older info but, I have a few photo's of what I've been told is a harvest mouse, taken summer 2009 on the Castle Eden walkway.

Yes it looks like the bird in the field, the one in hand I'd have said it had alot more white, even the one in the field seems to have more brown than what I saw but I saw it from the other side.  But Happy to agree it's the same bird.  ;D

Like I said this is only a possible sighting, I'm not an avid bird watcher, but have an interest.  I saw a mostly white bird as I walked the dogs along Jacques Court (On the Headland Hartlepool) at the end of the bushes between the walk and the tennis courts.  It was quite close 10-15ft away at the most and it was a mainly white bird with bits black-grey in it.  Now looking in the RSPB book the only thing near to what I saw was a Siberian Stonechat.

Now is that possible (unsure so not posted in the sightings etc) or is it more likely to be a part albino sparrow which to my eye would be about the same size and shape to what I saw and there are lots of sparrows along that pathway.  Or maybe it is the Snow bunting I saw a few weeks earlier now in it's winter plumage but it was nothing like the picture of a winter plumage Snow Bunting in the RSPB book I have and the shape was a little different.

Hopefully someone with a bit more experience can go along and ID it correctly and share the credit with me :)

P.I.Nochio here from MonkeyPool,  You'll find it hard to stop people using alias, I've had my nickname for over 20 years now and I use it on most forums I visit, The main reason I started to us it was my name was already taken so unless I became a number at the end of the name I couldn't use it and I'm sure it is the same with most of you.

Anyone nowadays can make an E-mail so they can register under a false name, Banning IP address's stops most Alias as most don't know or can't fake their IP address, Banning MAC address's is the best way todate I'm aware of, but I don't know if it can be done on these forums.

I'm sure in the case of Mr Buzzard  the members can work out who it is, as he seems to know many of you in the field.

Anyway that's it from me

Kind Regards

D T Young (Hartlepool)

Damm I gave my real ID away ::)

General Discussion / Abbreviations and terminology
September 24, 2009, 09:29:20 AM
??? Any chance someone can take the time out to produce a list of abbreviation and terminology used within the world of bird watchers. (and maybe add it to the drop down menu's)  The Abbreviations being the more needed as the other I can look up but with abbreviation's there is no way to look them up as they are often used solely by a select few to mean something to them and them alone.

Below are a few examples and what I believe they mean

pintail c120  = c = count
Buzzard sp flew high  = sp = Species
cowpen bewley cp = cp = cycle path
ca 120 Oystercatcher = ca = count again?
small gp Kittiwakes = gp = group
Only LTT, Bullfinch = ltt = Long tailed tit
2 pb brent geese = pb = if it was pf I'd guess pink footed but pb ?? (found it as I looked for more examples PB = Pale Bellied)

I'm sure there are many others I've not found after a quick scan of the sightings page and My guess's above maybe correct but I don't know for sure and I'm sure others new to bird watching have the same problem.
