Herring gull - black on yellow - YG83- Parton Rocks - headland Hartlepool-  13/10/17 noon

Thank you for reporting your sighting of a colour ringed Gull.
It's a bird which was colour-ringed ringed at Harewood Whin landfill site, to the west of York, (53.960 -1.177). The bird was caught using a Cannon Net and is one of around 2500 Gulls which have been caught and colour ringed to date.

Harewood Whin is one of the decreasing number of Landfill sites in the UK where it is possible to operate for the catching and ringing of gulls. Whilst with us the gulls feed on the Landfill site during the day and roost on the floods in Lower Derwent Valley National Nature Reserve or on the Humber Estuary.

The bird was rung on 30th June 2017 and yours is the first sighting since it was rung

I've seen around a dozen different birds returned so far this winter. OY NY remains the oldest.  There are a couple more older birds ringed in the early 90's and 2000's.
I keep the coordinator updated.

On 16/12/2016 I saw/photo'd -

OY NY
RN GW
RG GN
LW GN
WR WR
YN GN
GY WN

Sometimes there's only the odd one or two in view from the road, other times up to a dozen. They feed around the golf course as well.

I've seen two different birds on Cowpen Marsh. Usually a few turn up on Seal Sands and at RSPB Saltholme but I've not seen any colour ringed birds amongst the hundreds of Curlew there.

Few more  Curlew this morning.

W (hint of red above it, not sure if it is inside of the ring though)above and below knee, metal ring left leg. OY right.

RN above, W below, GW

OY above, W and metal below, NY

It was nice to see this regular wintering Curlew back on Seaton Common this morning. I think it's the oldest bird we still have around.

OY NY ringed on 7th September 1991 on Seal Sands as a juvenile bird (BTO ring no. FC48911)

Just running through group photos on memory card and OY NY was back on Seaton Common on 16.12 @15:00

3 blokes there today, setting fires with petrol, unsure if they were there officially or not.  freezing and a bit away so not sure if quality good enough.
