Saltholme highlights from this afternoon:
I missed the long-tailed duck, whic was widely reported by others (apparently it flew from Saltholme Hide ca. 10 minutes before my arrival), but there were plenty of other goodies on a cold, sunny day.
Song thrush and siskins seen near the fire station field. A male brambling was visiting the WWP feeding station. Highlights at Paddy's included two red-breasted mergansers.
Spoonbill, stonechat, 7 pintail, at least a dozen snipe, a turnstone and 25 dunlin were among the numerous highlights from Saltholme Hide.
Red kite flying over Eaglescliffe 08:57, east to west. Approximately level with Allens West station (I saw it from my kitchen window), heading for Coatham woods.

Apologies for my mistake ( 7th of Jan ) I now believe it is a mistle thrush singing fens estate Hartlepool . 1.25 am . Although I believe coming from Rossmere Park direction .
Baikal teal drake still at Stoneybeck by Bishop Middleham, but often elusive. Also lesser black-backed gull, common gull, pochard, shoveler, tufted duck, wigeon, little grebe etc.
Hawfinch seen ca. 11:30, from public road near start of track to Castle Lake.

Saltholme highlights from the final afternoon of the year:
Kingfisher seen by others from the VC.
Kestrel spotted hunting near Top Tank, while reed buntings and long-tailed tits visted the WWP feeding station.
Ca. 20 species from Paddy's Pool hide, including pochard and shoveler.
A pair of stonechats on the dragonfly path.
31 bird species observed from Saltholme hide in about 40 minutes, including 4 pintail, 2 goldeneye, at least 11 snipe and 36 dunlin. A hare was basking n one of the banks throughout my time in the hide.
Saw a male sparrowhawk in my garden (Eaglescliffe, Orchard Estate) on 26/12/2023, and a female behind Egglescliffe church in 30/12/2023.
Morning visit to Hartlepool, 30/12/23.
Notable sighting on the Headland (ca. 10 - 11) included 100+ common scoter (didn't find any velvets among them), 1 red-throated diver, several shag, red-breasted merganser, and eider. Wader species included oystercatcher, redshank, turnstone, purple sandpiper and ringed plover.
Failed to find black redstart in ca. 30 minutes of searching on Ferry Road.

Holme Fleet/Cowpen Marsh. PM...Hundreds of Golden Plover, Lapwing and Curlew producing a right spectacle when flying overhead..3 Short Eared Owls, Male Marsh Harrier, 2 buzzards and 3 kestrels. Also a Lovely dog fox.
1 Spoonbill on the wet grassland and 4 Whooper Swan on Back Saltholme at 09:20 this morning.

Seen on 6th December 2023, a male pintail on Ropner Park lake, Stockton. (I have a phone camera record shot).

Saltholme highlights from a very windy afternoon.
Male marsh harrier and snipe seen from the Phil Stead Hide ca. 13:00.
Sponbill seen on the wet grassland from paddy's then seen again on Back Saltholme. A total of 21 species seen from Paddy's (highlights included stonechat, pochard and sholveler), and 28 species from Saltholme Hide (half a dozen pintail, two goldeneye and 500+ golden plover were among the other obvious highlights).
Kingfisher seen by numerous others from the VC but I was out of luck.
Around 3:30 pm today (15/12), three cattle egrets with cattle across road from the gas demand station on Seal Sands Road.
