Hurworth Burn at lunchtime today: white-fronted geese, pink-footed geese, several great crested grebes, curlew, wigeon and a single willow tit.
Heard my first chiffchaff in Albert Park this morning! And the drake pintail duck is still showing well, along with several gadwell, a little grebe and the usual mallard, Canada geese, mute swan pair, black headed and herring gulls, moorhen, coot and tufted ducks

Male Sparrowhawk calling and displaying to female over Fens Estate Hartlepool. Showing they are full of the joys of spring already. Not sure the other local birds will be quite so happy about them.
Iceland gull still present today, on waste ground off Haverton Hill Road, about 200 m before the recycling centre roundabout.

What appeared to be a 1st winter Iceland Gull among the gull roost (clearly smaller than GBB Gull stood next to it). Has this been reported before?
Parton Rocks:- Only 2 purple sandpipers found.
Beach north of Parton Rocks:- At least 25 sanderling, probably more.
Unfortunate addition to my earlier post. The photos used were not apparently of the actual birds seen. So once again unfortunately does not forward my case.
I would like to provide an update on a sighting I reported from the east coast mainline of a Hobby at the end of March last year.
Iam obviously aware that most references state the birds do not arrive back in the country until April.
Obviously since then I have taken a keener interest in the birds return dates.
Photographs have this week appeared on RSPB birders website of a pair of Hobbies in Buckinghamshire.
I have further come across material from the Woodland Trust stating that the birds are known to in some cases return in March..
I am 100 % certain it was a Hobby I saw at relatively close range with distinctive and unmistakable 'red trousers' .
So please keep your eyes open as I believe these things can't be set in stone.

2/1/25 at lunchtime, 2 male goosanders on the lake at Albert Park, Middlesbrough
Red-crested pochard still at Ropner Park this morning (a lot bolder than last tiem I saw it). Also at least 8 goosander and several ring-necked parakeets. Treecreeper heard but not seen.
Spoonbill on Dorman's during a brief lunchtime visit today.
