Curlew from Seaton Common on 28th/29th November 2011 -

1. "OY NY" was ringed on 7th September 1991 as a juvenile bird (BTO ring no. FC48911). The bird remained using Seal Sands & Seaton Common throughout the winter and when over-summering and moulting during 1992 as a first summer. Sightings would suggest it emigrated in it's second summer sometime after 22nd March 1993, returning by 5th July. Thereafter it was generally recorded on Seal Sands during the late summer/autumn (July - August) and then again late winter (January – March, once in April; 11th in 1995). Since our team was disbanded at the University in late 2001, the few observations made were by the two of us, largely of the bird foraging on Seaton Common in autumn and winter. You were last to report the bird, on Seaton Common on 22nd March 2008.

2. "RY GR" was ringed on 6th March 1992 as an adult (BTO ring no. FA25118) – born in a year previous to 1991. Sightings would suggest the bird largely uses Seal Sands during the late summer/autumn with all winter sightings from Seaton Common. This is the second sighting for 2011, the previous in October from Seaton Common.

3. "WR OY" was ringed on 21st July 1997 as an adult (BTO ring no. FC80366) – born in a year previous to 1997. This bird's pattern of occurrence and location is similar to that of the previous individual. You were also the last to report this bird, 16th March 2008 at Seaton Common.

4. "WR WR" was ringed on 21st July 1997 as an adult (BTO ring no. FC80379) – born in a year previous to 1997. The few sightings of this bird again reflects a pattern of occurrence similar to the previous two individuals though John Grieveson did record it on Seal Sands in January 2005. I last sighted the bird, this feeding on Seal Sands on 17th September 2008.

5. "GY WN" was ringed on 16th July 2001 as an adult (BTO ring no. FA86718) – born in a year previous to 2001. There has only been three previous re-sightings of this bird, twice on Seal Sands (Sept 2002, August 2008) and Seaton Common (November 2009).

The bird was ringed as a female (presumed first year) on 6th May 2011, the day before you saw it, at Grainfoot Inlet, Ladybower Reservoir (N arm, E shore), Upper Derwent Valley, Derbyshire (SK 190 879) with ring NW28767. It weighed 56 g at the time and had a wing length of 114 mm. I attach a photo of the bird as it was being ringed.

Two other orange coded darvic Herring Gulls sighted over last week are likely to be from the same location.

I've reported it to the BTO but it appears similar to those used in the UK.

RW OG was ringed (BTO ring FC48905) on 29th July 1991 at Seal Sands and aged as an 'adult' (first summer or older). Prior to this winter RW OG was last recorded on 19th November 2009 when I observed it feeding at Seaton Common.  I've previously recorded this bird on only three occasions, twice on Bran Sands (14/12/00 & 12/09/07) and Seaton Common (13/12/00).

QuoteRinged Seal Sands on 7th September 1991 as a juvenile bird (BTO ring no. FC48911).

The bird remained using Seal Sands & Seaton Common throughout the winter and when over-summering and moulting during 1992 as a first summer.  Sightings would suggest it emigrated in it's second summer sometime after 22nd March 1993, returning by 5th July.  Thereafter it was generally recorded on Seal Sands during the late summer/autumn (July - August) and then again late winter (January – March, once in April; 11th in 1995).  Since our team was disbanded at the University in late 2001, the few observations made were by the two of us, largely of the bird foraging on Seaton Common in autumn and winter.  You were last to report the bird, on Seaton Common on 22nd March 2008. Then again on 27/02/2012, 13/04/2012 and now 27/09/2012.

A second sighting of this bird.

QuoteHerring gull with orange colour ring 1388 was originally ringed on the 6th July 2001 on the Isle of May, Fife (NT6599) as a nestling in the colony there. It has metal BTO ring number GA24241. We then caught this individual on Ellington road landfill, near Ashington, Northumberland (NZ2689) on the 10th March 2005, and the colour ring was added. Since then I have received no sightings of this bird until now, so it is interesting that it is still alive and well. 

Interestingly this is the first sighting from Ellington road landfill to Seaton Common (previous sightings have been at Seaton Sluice and Longscare Rocks). We have had several movements to and from the Isle of May from both Ellington Road and from Scarborough, where most of our birds have now been ringed.

A colour ringed Oystercatcher first seen at Saltburn in November last year was again at Saltburn on Saturday 16th February 2013.
It has a White colour ring which should read P46, however the outer coating of the ring is starting to break down and only P4 is legible.
I did manage to read the metal ring and this is FH08473 and was rung as a pullus on the library roof of Aberdeen University (294km away) on the 19th June 2009.
This is the first sighting of it anywhere since been rung.

The bird remained using Seal Sands & Seaton Common throughout the winter and when over-summering and moulting during 1992 as a first summer.  Sightings would suggest it emigrated in it?s second summer sometime after 22nd March 1993, returning by 5th July.  Thereafter it was generally recorded on Seal Sands during the late summer/autumn (July - August) and then again late winter (January ? March, once in April; 11th in 1995).  The few observations made were by the two of us, largely of the bird foraging on Seaton Common in autumn and winter.  Since 2008 it's over wintered on Seaton Common most years.

Harewood Whin is one of the decreasing number of Landfill sites in the UK where it is possible to operate for the catching and ringing of gulls.  The gulls feed on the Landfill site during the day and roost on the floods in Lower Derwent Valley National Nature Reserve or on the Humber Estuary.
The bird was rung on 20th March 2015 and has not been seen elsewhere since it was rung.

The combination RW NW was unfortunately used on three birds by error and not just the one individual was the intention. Those three birds were ringed at Seal Sands on 29th July 1991, 5th February 1992 and 18th August 1994.  All were adults (at least one year old).  This means the individual you recorded was at least 23 years old and possibly 27 years or older.  This exceeds are our longevity record for a colour-ringed bird at Teesmouth which was 22 years and 5 months old as a minimum. The national record is 32 years and 7 months.

RW NW was last seen at Saltholme in December 2015.  However this was the first sighting since July 1999 prior to which I regularly recoded the bird at roost on Seal Sands or using coastal fields.  This drop off in the recording of RW NW is most likely reflects marked reduction in observation effort with the disbandment of our research team at Durham University in 2001. Observations would suggested that RW NW is primarily a coastal field feeder in and around Teesmouth during the non-breeding season.

All sightings (with dates and locations) of new and previously recorded colour-ringed individuals are very much wanted and appreciated so as to maintain the life histories of these birds which are submitted to the BTO for entry into the National Ringing Scheme Database for research conservation.  Back dated colour-ring sighting data is also much appreciated.

QuoteMany thanks for the sighting 2X4H is one of 4 pulli that were ringed at Coquest Island in Northhumberland last June by Chris Redfern. We know that 3 of the birds are still definitley alive from sightings.

I attach its life history which is short but we will gain more information over time. I expect that this bird may be a bit of a wanderer as it wont be breeding in its first year. Meds tend to be quite site faithful so hopefully 2X4H will return to you in future years.

It was ringed as a chick on Staple Island, Farnes (BTO 1407429) on 24/6/10.  It was then seen at Earlsferry, Fife on 18 & 28/9/10.  No further sightings until south at Seal Sands on 12/8/14, 01/09/15 & 21/8/16.  Nothing subsequently so good to know it is still alive and well.

QuoteWhite-UJP was ringed (DT36076) as a chick on Coquet Island on 17 July 2016; no previous sightings other than on Coquet, but it has been on Coquet island this year between 4-22 August- last seen on 22 August and as numbers now seem to be dwindling substantially, I guess it is on its way south. The big question now is whether it will take a coastal route, or travel overland from Teesside to the Mersey.

White-UHA was also ringed (DT21284) on Coquet Island, on 2 August 2015; also no previous sightings away from Coquet, but it has been on or near Coquet all summer, from 31 May until last seen on 17 August 2018.

QuoteYellow ZB - first ringed by the Dutch as a male gosling at Ny Aalesund, Spitsbergen, Svalbad, Norway on 12/8/98 with a metal ring only.
Recaptured and colour ringed in 2015 at Nordenskioldkysten, Spitsbergen when it was recorded as a female by the Dutch ringer (sexing is far more difficult at gosling stage).
It has not been recorded on the Solway wintering grounds since (due to it being metal ring only bird up until 2015 when the yellow ZB was added). Even so it has evaded detection since 2015 so it is good to hear that this 20 year old bird is still going strong...

Real time colour ring birding, Chris McGuigan/Nicholas Forrest

Over the past four years, several adult Little Ringed Plovers have been colour-ringed in east Scotland (only a single metal ring is used for pulli). This has allowed some close monitoring of the local breeding population as well as giving rise to numerous re-sightings of birds en-route to or from winter quarters to the south (most in England but two recoveries in Spain).

At 10.30 am on 22nd July 2019 Nicholas Ian Forrest photographed a colour-ringed Little Ringed Plover at RSPB Saltholme, at Billingham, Cleveland in NE England. (one of 35 or so seen there around that time). He emailed at 11am and I was able to quickly respond with the history of the bird. It had been ringed in Angus as a breeding adult female on 26th May 2017 and has returned to breed successfully at the same site each year since. We were also able to correspond in real time with the local keeper who keeps a close eye on the breeding site and he confirmed that the bird's male partner and their two juveniles were still there.

This confirms what we had suspected in previous years: the female often leaves a week or so before the male and the rest of the family catch up later. We were able to give Nicholas this info while he had the bird in front of him.   

The colour-ringed Little Ringed Plover at RSPB Saltholme, Cleveland being photographed and watched by Nicholas Forrest as Chris McGuigan emailed him the ringing information then also confirmed its' mate was still at the breeding site with their 2 kiddies!

Quote'H7' was ringed in the Lower Derwent Valley National Nature Reserve at Wheldrake Ings, North Yorkshire on the 17th July this year, as a breeding female from the local heronry, and yours is the first sighting since ringing.
